Strip brushes and brush seals are channel-mounted brushes used less for sweeping and more for sealing, guarding, or guiding — closing a gap while still allowing movement through it. A strip brush is built by folding filament into a metal (usually galvanized steel) or plastic channel base that's then screwed or clipped into place, so the result is effectively a brush in a continuous, cuttable-to-length strip rather than a round or cylindrical form.
The two biggest use cases are door and window weatherstripping, where a strip brush seals the gap under a door or around a sliding window against drafts, dust, and insects while still letting the door swing or the window slide freely, and escalator or moving-walkway skirt brushes, a safety item mounted along the skirt panel of an escalator to create a visual and physical buffer that discourages loose clothing, shoelaces, or fingers from being drawn into the gap between the moving steps and the stationary skirt. Beyond these two, strip brushes are also widely used inside machinery as dust and chip seals around moving parts, and as guide brushes that gently direct material (sheet stock, packaging, cable) through an opening without jamming or scratching it.
Filament choice follows the job: softer, finer PP or nylon filament for draft- and dust-sealing where flexibility and a close seal matter more than mechanical toughness, and stiffer or coarser filament where the strip also needs to act as a physical guide or light barrier. Channel width, filament trim length, and fill density are all selected together, because trim length determines how much of the gap the brush actually closes once compressed, and density determines how much air or dust still gets through between filaments.
We build strip brushes and brush seals to order at our Yuantan factory cluster, cut to your exact length with the channel, filament type, and trim length configured to your door, window, machine opening, or escalator skirt specification — including replacement strips built to match an existing worn sample.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a strip brush and a brush seal?
- They are the same construction — filament crimped into a continuous channel. 'Brush seal' describes the job (closing a gap against dust, draughts or debris); 'strip brush' describes the form. Machine guarding and conveyor sealing use metal-channel strip brushes; doors and windows use pile weatherstrip in a profile holder.
- Which channel material should I choose for a strip brush?
- Galvanized steel for general dry indoor use at the lowest cost, stainless steel for wet, washdown or corrosive environments, and aluminium where light weight or a non-magnetic channel matters.
- How tall should the filament be?
- Measure the gap and add a small overlap (typically 2–5 mm) so the tips stay in light contact. Our metal-channel strip brushes are made with 5–180 mm filament height on a 3–10 mm backing.
