Road Sweeping Brushes

Road sweeper brushes are the wearing parts that do the actual sweeping on a street sweeper truck, and they fall into three main families: gutter brooms (also called side brooms) that spin at an angle to drag curb-line litter and grit into the machine's pickup path, main brooms (cylinder brooms) that run the full width of the hopper and lift debris off the road surface into the collection system, and wafer or segment brooms, which build the same cylinder broom out of individually replaceable disc segments rather than one continuous core, so a worn section can be swapped without discarding the whole broom.

Fill material is chosen by what the machine is sweeping and the surface it's sweeping on. Polypropylene (PP) is the standard, cost-effective choice for everyday litter and dust on asphalt and concrete; PP combined with steel wire adds aggressive bite for packed dirt, gravel, or construction debris where plain PP would just push material around instead of lifting it; and poly/wire mixes are specified when a sweeper runs across a mix of surfaces in one shift. Filament diameter and fill density are tuned to the broom's RPM and the debris load — a finer, denser fill gives a cleaner finish on light litter, while a coarser, sparser fill survives heavier debris without matting down and losing contact with the road.

Fit is the other half of specifying the right broom correctly: outer diameter, bore diameter, and overall thickness or width all have to match the hub and housing of the specific sweeper model, and different manufacturers — Nilfisk, Dulevo, Johnston, Bucher, Broce among them — use different mounting patterns even for brooms that look similar at a glance.
